An Ode to Alfie Jacques

I first met Alfie Jacques, Onondaga Turtle Clan, in 2019 at a small wooden-lacrosse-stick festival at Onondaga Lake. A few years later I brought his story to BI, at which point I learned a tournament would be held in his honor to fundraise for his recent medical expenses. We launched into pre-production and two days later I was at the Onondaga Nation Arena meeting Alfie again. And, as fate would have it, what a privilege it was to spend that moment with him and the craft he dedicated his life to.

Tuskegee: More than the Study

Between 1932 to 1972, the United States Public Health Service’s Syphilis Study recruited poor Black men who had been infected with syphilis and denied them the cure for the disease in the name of research. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Black leaders in Tuskegee worked to combat the vaccine hesitancy built by the notorious study. We travelled there to capture a window into the Tuskegee beyond just the buzzword.
